Artist Introduction | Sanyu (1901–1966)

Sanyu, born in Sichuan, China, was one of the pioneering Chinese artists in early 20th-century France. He skillfully blended the flowing lines of traditional Chinese ink painting with the composition and colors of Western modern art, forging a style distinctly his own. Best known for his depictions of female nudes, still lifes, and floral subjects, Sanyu is often referred to as the “Oriental Matisse.”

Sanyu’s works are characterized by simple, elegant lines and large areas of blank space, reflecting the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting. His series of female nudes are especially famous for combining Western figure drawing techniques with the subtle, reserved emotions typical of Eastern art, resulting in calm but powerful images.
